Calgary Airport Tunnel - Have Your Say!

The Airport Tunnel is proving to be a highly divisive issue. Some candidates for City Council are misleading the public.

Here's the problem:

  • No airport access from Barlow Trail.

In 2011, the Calgary Airport Authority will commence construction of a new runway and will close access to the airport from Barlow Trail.

  • City Council broke its promise.

City Council has promised again and again to extend Airport Trail through a tunnel under the new runway, keeping East Calgary connected to the Airport. However, they failed to fund it and to make it a funding priority for the provincial and federal governments.

  • Deerfoot Trail will be more congested.

Without the tunnel, traffic will significantly increase on an already congested Deerfoot Trail. This is will be a transportation nightmare for all Calgarians.

  • More passengers, more staff equals more traffic.

Twelve million passengers use the Calgary International Airport per year, and more than 15,000 employees work there. Planned airport expansion and development of the adjacent lands will result in further increases in traffic on Deerfoot Trail.

  • No tunnel means no NE LRT access to airport.

Transit service is terrible for such a major activity hub (you can see the NE LRT from the airport, yet City Council has no intention of ever connecting the NE LRT to the airport). Not building a tunnel now will ensure that LRT access to the airport from the NE never happens.

  • Longer commute time for airport staff.

The commute time for airport employees who live in East Calgary, will double - perhaps an additional 36,000 km or 1000 person-hours per day wasted.

  • Millions were invested by businesses after tunnel promised by City.

Dozens of businesses, such as hotels, restaurants and stores, have been built on the City's promise that a tunnel will be built to connect East Calgary to the airport.

  • The real cost of building the tunnel now is a maximum of $150 million.

There is a lot of talk about the tunnel costing as much as $500 million. However, that's not the whole story. The City's own engineers have estimated that NOT building the tunnel will cost $350 million in upgrades to the existing road infrastructure. The City's high end estimate for building the tunnel is an additional $150 million.

We must stop this traffic disaster!
